EWG's TSA team participated in a state-wide competition held on Saturday at N.K. High School. We had a very strong showing in several competitions. Schools from all over the state competed in a wide variety of technology-based skills. Kate Nelkin took second place in the Coding Competition, third place in the Photographic Technology Competition, and third place in the Tech Bowl competition.
Nate Arnold had a very strong showing in the Dragster competition, taking home 4th place. He also placed 3rd in the Tech Bowl. They worked very hard over the course of the year and deserved to be recognized. Congratulations!
The EWGHS Wind Turbine Team had an incredible day at the 4th Annual RI Wind Turbine Competition at CCRI, competing against other fantastic schools from around RI. They participated in Engineering Interviews, Wind Tunnel Turbine Testing, Wind Energy Knowledge Quizzes, and a Block Island Wind Farm Kahoot. Some of the students even spent time discussing renewable energy and offshore wind with Congressman Seth Magaziner. I couldn't be more proud of them!
'Wind Soup' (Brielle Bamberry, Devon Cranston, Andan Fry, Akira Hall, and Jesse Ruscito) came in first place in the Advanced Division. 'Hobbits of the Wind' (Emma Markhart, Mason Rosa, and Noah Thurn) came in first place in the KidWind Division. They, along with last year's winning teams 'Wacky Wavy Inflatable Windmen' (Liam Raymond, Logan O'Connor, and Armaan Suri; first place in KidWind Division) and 'Seagull Engineers' (Eben Bamberry, Nadia Frost, and Matt Zeilinski; second place in KidWind Division), have ALL been invited to the KidWind World Competition in Minnesota!
If anyone would like to support the team, we are still selling 3D-printed Wind Turbine Kits ($15) and EWG Tee Shirts ($25)...and as always, donations are also accepted! Contact Amy Biagioni-Chmura at Amy_Biagioni@ewg.k12.ri.us for more information.
Four students attended the Rhode Island Model Legislature at the state capital this past Saturday. They represented our school district wonderfully. The four were Brielle Bamberry, Julia Kiernan, Graeme Griffiths, and Owen Spira. All four submitted original legislation, and Graeme had one bill incorporated into Model Leg Law.
After interviewing and winning those positions, Graeme and Owen were also involved in state leadership. Since early November, they have worked closely with students from across the state to forge ties, perfect the legislative process, and build mutual respect in biweekly meetings. Owen was also recognized for his contributions and commitment to the program this year, in addition to his outstanding performance on Saturday and during the caucus session this past Wednesday. He was awarded one of two scholarships out of over 70 RI students to attend the Youth Conference on National Affairs this summer outside of Asheville, NC.
18-24-year-olds are the lowest voter turnout age group in the nation, but those who engage in civics in High School have incredibly high political participation. These kids are our future leaders.

The Advanced Culinary students spread some sweetness for Valentine's Day by selling chocolate-covered strawberries to teachers and staff. This enterprise proved to be a big hit among everyone. We hope that Cupid's arrow found its way to the hearts of loved ones through the sweet offerings of our students. We at EWG are incredibly proud of our culinary students for their initiative and passion in making this Valentine's Day a memorable one.

EWG alumni Taylor Fordham came to speak to students about careers in animal training. This included marine mammal training and, of course, dog training! The techniques she uses in her business, Rhody Paws, mirror training done with animals in zoos and aquariums! 🐬🐶
She showed students how to train behaviors using capturing, shaping, and target training for the demonstration. She also highlighted how to use training techniques to teach cooperative care behaviors, especially when it comes to nail clipping!

Congratulations to Kim DePietro, EWG, HOBY winner! A gentleman named Hugh O’Brian believed in the potential of every human being and was committed to helping young people of the world become significant contributors to society. In 1958, the Hugh O’Brian Youth Leadership (HOBY) was formed. His legacy lives on today, with more than 500,000 HOBY alumni making a difference in the lives of others, thanks to the vision and passion of HOBY’s founder, Hugh O’Brian. The format was simple: bring a group of high school sophomores with leadership potential together with a group of distinguished leaders in business, education, and government and let the two interact and grow together in a university environment. These young leaders got a realistic look at what it takes to positively impact a community, better enabling them “to think for themselves.” Hoby is awarded to only one sophomore each year, one of the most prestigious honors in a high school career.
Good Morning!
I am sharing details about the Wreaths Across America event to be held at the Junior-Senior High School next Monday (December 11th). We are so proud and excited to host this important event to honor many military heroes.
The convoy is set to arrive on our campus at 4:45 PM, with the ceremony starting at 5:15 PM in the newly renovated auditorium. The ceremony will take about an hour, and we will then serve dinner to the members of the convoy as well as our invited guests and ceremony participants. We have received enough community and business donations to cover the entire cost of the catered dinner for approximately 225 people! This is an amazing show of support for our military and a reminder of the generosity of our community. THANK YOU!!
Community members are welcome to attend the ceremony, however, we do have limited parking and limited seating. Alternatives to view the presentation are available as follows:
The event will be live on Wreaths Radio and that would be found on this link: https://www.
wreathsacrossamerica.org/ then click the Wreaths Radio.
EWG will also live stream the event on Youtube:
https://youtube.com/live/7reO_GThAAU?feature=share
https://ewgrsd.org/waa
Parking will be available in the following areas: The senior lot, the greenhouse lot, any of the spots around the perimeter of the JSHS building, and the administration lot. The front of the building and the small new lot across from the senior lot will be closed for convoy vehicles and the mobile education center (which will be available to the community prior to the ceremony).
We are reserving handicap parking on the junior high school side of the building (almost completely around the one-way access road). Anyone who needs to be dropped off at the main entrance (the clock tower), can do so prior to the convoy arrival. The driver can then drive back around to any of the available parking areas as described above.
Community members who wish to attend should plan on arriving before 4:35 to avoid interfering with the convoy.
I hope you will be able to find the time to view this amazing event. We will keep the Youtube link available for viewing after the fact if that is a more convenient option. Thank you again for your incredible support.
Sincerely,
James Erinakes
Superintendent
